This thesis compares Elena Ferrante and Roberto Saviano, two authors connected to Naples who became, at different times, publishing phenomena of international scope. Despite sharing nearly all the conditions that might explain their relationship with visibility, the two writers chose opposite paths: Ferrante built her public identity on anonymity, refusing public appearances and in-person interviews; Saviano, by contrast, became one of the most exposed figures on the Italian scene, partly by choice and partly by necessity, due to the threats he has received and the police protection he has lived under for years.
The work is divided into three chapters. The first two reconstruct the literary and public paths of the two authors individually, from their debuts to their most recent works, with particular attention to the relationship between writing and public image. The third chapter develops the actual comparison, along four thematic lines: the way each author narrates Naples, their opposing strategies of visibility and invisibility, the different kinds of success achieved in Italy and abroad, and finally the episode of Ferrante's nomination for the Premio Strega proposed by Saviano in 2015, taken as a moment that synthesizes the whole comparison.
Ferrante's choice is also placed within a broader tradition of women writers who in the past resorted to pseudonyms, while highlighting a substantial difference: whereas anonymity once served to conceal the writer's gender, Ferrante's choice does not hide her identity as a woman at all, but instead defends the right of the author, regardless of gender, to remain distinct from their work.
The aim of the thesis is therefore to observe how these two opposing strategies of visibility have shaped the style, themes, and relationship with readers of the two authors, in order to reflect on what it means today, for a writer, to choose to appear or to disappear.
