Abstract

This research examines the relationship between the publishing industry and social media, focusing on the changes that have shaped the publishing landscape in recent years. It explores how social media platforms have changed the ways books are discovered, as well as how they are read, discussed, and perceived by readers and social media users. Particular attention is devoted to BookTok, the TikTok community where users share content, recommendations, and opinions about books and reading. The study investigates the role of social media in the publishing industry. It asks whether readers’ tastes and preferences are influenced by the mediation of social media and influencers. The aim is to understand whether these changes may affect the balance between the cultural and economic impact of books. Through both theoretical analysis and empirical research, this thesis provides an overview of the phenomenon, taking into account its communicative, cultural, and economic dimensions. It aims to identify the opportunities offered by contemporary forms of editorial mediation, while also examining the challenges resulting from the growing influence of social media on the publishing industry.
