This thesis examines the philosophical meaning of difference in contemporary thought, focusing on Gianni Vattimo as the point of convergence between Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida and the broader tradition of hermeneutics. Its central aim is to investigate how the crisis of Western metaphysics transforms the concepts of identity, presence, subjectivity and truth, and how this transformation makes possible a different way of philosophising.
The first part considers Nietzsche’s relationship with metaphysics, particularly through Heidegger’s interpretation of Nietzsche as both the culmination and possible dissolution of metaphysical thought. The analysis then turns to the limits of identity and to repetition, understood not as the return of the identical but as the manifestation of an originary difference that continuously generates new configurations of reality. This perspective opens the way to a broader examination of difference as an ontological and generative principle.
The thesis subsequently analyses Heidegger’s ontological difference and Derrida’s différance. While Heidegger questions the identification of Being with beings and the metaphysics of presence, Derrida radicalises this problem by describing difference as a movement of spacing and temporal deferral that precedes every fixed identity and every stable meaning. The study nevertheless argues that the radicalisation of difference may lead to an aporetic multiplication of traces and ultimately to the dissolution of the very paradigm it establishes.
Particular attention is also devoted to the linguistic deconstruction of the subject. Language is no longer regarded as a transparent instrument through which a self-identical subject expresses an already constituted meaning; instead, subjectivity itself emerges as historically and linguistically mediated, divided and exposed to forces that exceed conscious control.
Against both metaphysical foundationalism and the excesses of an absolute philosophy of differ
