The thesis offers an exploration of the linguistic dynamics applied by Western leaders at the World Economic Forum of Davos 2026, within the context of the current fragmentation of the political climate. The objective is uncovering how the Western leaders whose speeches have been selected to be part of the research corpus address the current global crisis and how they each propose to overcome it, while taking into account how their discourse is shaped by the setting. The first chapter gives context to the research by delving into the history and characteristics of the World Economic Forum, as well as giving an overarching perspective of the current political scene on a global level. The second chapter provides the theoretical foundation of the research, illustrating several tools and criteria of discourse analysis, as well as a methodological framework based upon the work of Professor Florian Schneider. The third chapter contains the analysis of a corpus of four addresses, delivered at the 2026 Davos meeting of WEF by Mark Carney, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ursula Von der Leyen and Donald Trump. The thesis examines each speech separately, inspecting context, issues and solutions, actors within the narrative, lexical and rhetorical choices, implicit truths and the role of the country within the narrative. A comparative analysis follows, wherein speeches are surveyed for differences and similarities. Ultimately, the research highlights that the four speeches display analogous themes of readiness in the face of change and of need for transformation and restoration of values, as well as the notion that cultivating strength through a collective process of adaptation to a new global order is both theoretically plausible and currently observable.
