Abstract

The following thesis work is based on a series of activities carried out in the laboratory at DIME (Department of Mechanical, Energy, Management and Transportation Engineering) of the University of Genoa. The mentioned activities consisted of studying and analyzing the diesel engine on the test bench, evaluating and varying the characteristic parameters of the compression ignition engine. The ultimate goal was to study the engine, powered with two different fuels, namely commercial diesel and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), under the same operating conditions. The possibility of varying the characterizing parameters according to need made it possible to pursue the operating conditions planned for the engine tests. The final work was to extract all the parameters from the tests and make them analyzable, also through graphs making explicit the various differences that are found with the use of the two different fuels. The thesis topic, proposed by Prof. Eng. Giorgio Zamboni, was chosen for the following reasons: first of all, for the opportunity to work in close contact with an ICE test bench and start accumulating practical experience, which will certainly prove useful in our future employment; secondly, this activity allowed us to study and work concretely on today's problems related to decarbonization in the automotive sector and the reduction of pollutants emitted into the atmosphere.
