Riconnettere l'invisibile. Continuità e discontinuità dell'acquedotto storico di Genova.

Abstract

L’Acquedotto Storico di Genova rappresenta una delle più importanti infrastrutture storiche della città, ma oggi risulta poco riconoscibile nel paesaggio urbano e nell’immaginario collettivo. Le trasformazioni del territorio ne hanno infatti frammentato il tracciato, compromettendone la continuità percettiva e rendendo difficile coglierne l’unità e il valore storico. Pur conservando numerosi manufatti di pregio, l’acquedotto appare spesso inglobato nel tessuto urbano contemporaneo, perdendo la propria identità di sistema.

La ricerca affronta questa condizione attraverso un’analisi del rapporto tra patrimonio, paesaggio e percezione urbana, assumendo come riferimento teorico il concetto di leggibilità di Kevin Lynch. In questa prospettiva, la scarsa riconoscibilità dell’acquedotto non dipende soltanto dalla perdita di elementi materiali, ma soprattutto dall’indebolimento delle relazioni che consentono di identificarlo come un sistema continuo, dotato di identità e significato.

A partire da queste considerazioni, la tesi propone una strategia di valorizzazione finalizzata a restituire all’Acquedotto Storico di Genova una nuova centralità nel paesaggio urbano e territoriale. Il progetto supera una logica di sola conservazione dei singoli manufatti e mira a ricostruire la continuità percettiva dell’infrastruttura, trasformandola in un sistema culturale, sociale e paesaggistico contemporaneo.

La proposta si fonda sul concetto di riscoperta e si articola in quattro obiettivi: riconnettere, creando nuove occasioni di socialità; riconoscere, migliorando la leggibilità del tracciato attraverso strumenti narrativi e culturali; rigenerare, valorizzando gli spazi di quiete e il rapporto con la natura; ripercorrere, reinterpretando l’acquedotto come infrastruttura lenta integrata nella rete escursionistica esistente.

The Historic Aqueduct of Genoa is one of the city's most significant historical infrastructures, yet today it is scarcely recognizable within both the urban landscape and the collective imagination. Over the centuries, urban and territorial transformations have fragmented its route, disrupting its perceptual continuity and making it difficult to understand its unity and historical value. Although many valuable architectural elements have been preserved, the aqueduct has often been absorbed into the contemporary urban fabric, losing its identity as a coherent system.

This research addresses this condition by examining the relationship between cultural heritage, landscape, and urban perception, taking Kevin Lynch's concept of legibility as its main theoretical framework. From this perspective, the aqueduct's limited recognizability is not only the result of the loss of physical elements, but also of the weakening of the spatial relationships that allow it to be perceived as a continuous system with its own identity and meaning.

Building on these considerations, the thesis proposes a strategy aimed at restoring the Historic Aqueduct of Genoa to a central role within the urban and territorial landscape. Rather than focusing solely on the conservation of individual structures, the project seeks to reconstruct the infrastructure's perceptual continuity, transforming it into a contemporary cultural, social, and landscape system.

The proposal is based on the concept of rediscovery and is structured around four objectives: reconnecting the aqueduct by creating new opportunities for social interaction; recognizing it by enhancing the legibility of its route through narrative and cultural devices; regenerating spaces by enhancing quiet areas and strengthening the relationship with nature; and retracing the aqueduct by reinterpreting it as a slow-mobility infrastructure connected to the existing hiking network.
