This thesis investigates the relationship between sports participation and the development of social relationships in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The literature review highlights how engagement in sports promotes significant improvements across several areas of functioning in individuals with ASD, ranging from motor and symptom-related aspects to social, communicative, and self-regulation skills. The study also examines the barriers to sports participation and the factors that facilitate it, with particular attention to innovative inclusion strategies such as the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Unified Sports. Finally, a comparison between individual and team sports is presented, revealing that the relational benefits depend less on the specific technical characteristics of the sport than on participation in a cooperative and stimulating group environment. These findings underscore the need to promote inclusive and accessible sports programs within local communities.
