"Why Look at Animals?": ruolo e significato dell'esposizione dell'animale nelle opere di Janis Rafa (2013-2025)

Abstract

La tesi affronta la presenza animale nell’arte contemporanea attraverso l’analisi dei lavori dell’artista greca Janis Rafa. Partendo dall’analisi del saggio Why look at animals? di John Berger, approfondito con le riflessioni di Peter Singer, Jaques Derrida, Donna Haraway e Baptiste Morizot, la ricerca mette in luce le dinamiche di oggettificazione, marginalizzazione e antropomorfizzazione a cui gli animali sono sottoposti la restituzione in ambito artistico di queste dinamiche. Importante risulta essere l’indagine del rapporto tra uomo e animale che trova centralità e approfondimento all’interno della pratica artistica di Janis Rafa. L’analisi delle opere dell’artista mostra la ricezione e restituzione delle diverse realtà concernenti gli animali. Dalle opere e dalle mostre di Janis Rafa emerge come questo rapporto si declini nel senso di una dominazione dell’uomo sugli animali; l’artista cerca dunque di denunciare questa realtà sovvertendo la gerarchizzazione antropologica della società ponendo gli animali come protagonisti e obbligando lo spettatore a adattarsi a un mondo naturale da cui si è sempre più allontanato. La scelta non introdurre gli animali nella mostra concorre a portare la riflessione su un piano di lettura in grado di innescare riflessioni concernenti la violenza perpetrata dell’essere umano finalizzata alla soddisfazione dei suoi bisogni. Attraverso l’esame delle principali mostre personali e della collettiva Why Look at Animals? A Case for the Rights of Non-Human Lives (EMST, Atene, 2025), la tesi dimostra come l’arte contemporanea possa costituire uno spazio critico in grado di recepire le dinamiche di mutamento percettivo del soggetto animale e della necessità di salvaguardia del loro benessere.

This thesis explores the presence of animals in contemporary art through an analysis of the work of the Greek artist Janis Rafa. Starting with John Berger’s essay Why Look at Animals?, further developed through the reflections of Peter Singer, Jacques Derrida, Donna Haraway and Baptiste Morizot, the research highlights the dynamics of objectification, marginalization and anthropomorphization to which animals are subjected, as well as how these dynamics are translated into artistic practice. Particular attention is given to the human–animal relationship, which becomes a central focus in Janis Rafa’s work. The analysis of her artworks and exhibitions shows how different realities concerning animals are acknowledged and re-elaborated in her practice. Through her works and exhibitions, this relationship emerges as one marked by human domination over animals. The artist attempts to expose and question this condition by overturning the anthropocentric hierarchy of society, placing animals at the center of her works and requiring the viewer to adapt to a natural world from which humanity has increasingly distanced itself. Her decision not to include live animals in the exhibition space further shifts the focus toward a reflection on the violence overturning by human beings in order to satisfy their own needs. Through the examination of Rafa’s main solo exhibitions and the group exhibition Why Look at Animals? A Case for the Rights of Non-Human Lives (EMST, Athens, 2025), the thesis argues that contemporary art can act as a critical space capable of responding to changing perceptions of the animal subject and to the growing awareness of the need to safeguard animal well-being.
