Staying with the Anthropocene: tre configurazioni di speranza solarpunk

Abstract

La presente tesi parte dal presupposto che la crisi ecologica contemporanea sia anzitutto una crisi narrativa: le storie che l'umanità si racconta sul proprio rapporto con il pianeta condizionano profondamente scelte, comportamenti e possibilità d'azione. La ricerca si propone, dunque, di indagare il genere narrativo contemporaneo noto come Solarpunk come risposta letteraria e culturale alle sfide poste dall'Antropocene. Il quadro teorico entro cui si muove l'analisi è costruito attorno al pensiero della filosofa Donna Haraway e al suo concetto centrale di response-ability, teorizzato in Staying with the Trouble. Making Kin in the Chthulucene (2016) e che designa una riconcettualizzazione radicale del rapporto tra gli esseri viventi e il mondo che abitano. A completare il quadro teorico concorrono ulteriori voci critiche: la riflessione di Val Plumwood sull'esigenza di una different story capace di riconfigurare narrativamente il rapporto tra specie umana e ambiente; la proposta di Erin James di sviluppare una Anthropocene Narrative Theory che indaghi come la pratica narrativa risponda alle trasformazioni del mondo extratestuale e al tempo stesso le orienti; e il contributo di Giulia Fabbri sul ruolo delle scienze umane nella comprensione e nella risposta alla crisi antropocenica. Il corpus selezionato comprende 154 racconti tratti dalle undici principali antologie solarpunk di rilievo internazionale,mentre l’analisi si articola attorno a tre configurazioni narrative della responso-abilità, individuate a partire dalle figure di filo (cat's cradle) proposte da Haraway come metafore di mondeggiamento multispecie: Cura, Alleanza e Simbiosi. Ciascuna configurazione è esaminata attraverso un racconto solarpunk principale, che ne rappresenta la manifestazione più compiuta, affiancato da due testi supplementari che ne arricchiscono e ampliano il profilo analitico.

This thesis proceeds from the premise that the contemporary ecological crisis is, first and foremost, a narrative crisis: the stories humanity tells itself about its relationship with the planet profoundly shape choices, behaviours, and possibilities for action. The research therefore sets out to examine the contemporary narrative genre known as Solarpunk as a literary and cultural response to the challenges posed by the Anthropocene. The theoretical framework within which the analysis operates is built around the thought of philosopher Donna Haraway and her central concept of response-ability, theorised in Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene (2016), which designates a radical reconceptualisation of the relationship between living beings and the world they inhabit. The framework is further enriched by additional critical perspectives: Val Plumwood's reflection on the need for a different story capable of narratively reconfiguring the relationship between the human species and the environment; Erin James's proposal to develop an Anthropocene Narrative Theory that investigates how narrative practice both responds to and orients the transformations of the extratextual world; and Giulia Fabbri's contribution on the role of the humanities in understanding and responding to the Anthropocenic crisis. The selected corpus comprises 154 short stories drawn from the eleven principal Solarpunk anthologies of international significance. The analysis is organised around three narrative configurations of response-ability, identified on the basis of the string figures (cat's cradle) proposed by Haraway as metaphors for multispecies worlding: Care, Alliance, and Symbiosis. Each configuration is examined through a primary Solarpunk story representing its most fully realised manifestation, flanked by two supplementary texts that enrich and broaden its analytical profile.
