La rivolta cretese del 1866 e l’Italia: il caso genovese. Echi transnazionali di un'insurrezione balcanica.

Abstract

La mia tesi utilizza come caso di studio la rivolta cretese del 1866 e la analizza dalla prospettiva italiana e più nello specifico genovese per mettere in luce, tramite una ricerca che riunisce una bibliografia su più lingue e i documenti trovati in diversi archivi, le incongruenze relative alla rappresentazione presente nell’immaginario collettivo italiano della Grecia; incongruenze nate come conseguenza del patriottismo transnazionale che all’epoca dominava la concezione che i movimenti democratico-rivoluzionari italiani avevano delle lotte per l’indipendenza nelle terre orientali. Applicando infatti la categoria di guerra civile ottomana all’insurrezione di Creta e ponendo attenzione all’importanza della religione in tale contesto, emerge un quadro diverso da quello che un processo di Nation building più ispirato alla concezione italiana avrebbe potuto prevedere. Ciò risulta evidente se si prendono in considerazione i numerosi scritti di carattere celebrativo della lotta cretese prodotti in Italia e lo spirito dell’iniziativa patriottica di soccorso messa in atto dai gruppi mazziniani e garibaldini. Le fonti genovesi hanno quindi permesso di meglio comprendere la prospettiva italiana grazie ad un’analisi più approfondita delle argomentazioni che circolarono sui giornali cittadini e nelle lettere private delle maggiori figure dell’epoca, ma allo stesso tempo hanno consentito di ricostruire un buco nella storiografia ligure per quanto riguarda i legami transnazionali fra la città di Genova e la Grecia.

My thesis uses as a case study the Cretan revolt of 1866 and analyses it from the Italian and more specifically the Genoese perspective to shed light, through a research that reunites a bibliography of multiple languages and the documents found in different archives, the inconsistencies relative to the representation of Greece present in the Italian collective imagination; inconsistencies birthed as a consequence of the transnational patriotism that at the time dominated the conception that the Italian democratic-revolutionary movements had of the fights for independence in the eastern lands. By applying the category of Ottoman civil war to the Cretan insurrection and by paying attention to the importance that religion had in said context, a picture emerges that is indeed different from what a Nation building process more inspired by the Italian conception would have expected. This is evident if we take into consideration the numerous writings of celebratory character of the Cretan struggle produced in Italy and the spirit of the patriotic relief initiative implemented by the mazzinian and garibaldian groups. The Genoese sources have therefore allowed for a better comprehension of the Italian perspective thanks to a more in-depth analysis of the arguments that circulated on the city newspapers and in the private letters of some of the most influential figures of the time, but at the same time they have permitted the reconstruction of a lacking aspect in Ligurian historiography regarding the transnational ties between the city of Genoa and Greece.
