Indagini geografico - storiche tra toponomastica ed evoluzione del paesaggio: il caso della città di La Spezia (XVIII - XXI sec.)

Abstract

Il presente lavoro di tesi analizza l'evoluzione del paesaggio, sia dal punto di vista morfologico che urbano, della città di La Spezia tra il XVIII e il XXI secolo, utilizzando la cartografia e la toponomastica come principali strumenti d'indagine. Lo studio si concentra, in particolare, sul radicale cambiamento subito dalla città nel corso dell'Ottocento a seguito dell'avvio dei lavori per la costruzione dell'Arsenale Marittimo Militare, evidenziando gli elementi di trasformazione e quelli di permanenza. L'attenzione è rivolta alla toponomastica intesa come fondamentale strumento di conservazione della memoria dei luoghi. La ricerca si articola in tre capitoli: il primo delinea il quadro teorico della disciplina toponomastica e cartografica; il secondo analizza il periodo compreso tra il 1773 e il 1828 (fase pre-industriale); il terzo esamina il totale stravolgimento del tessuto urbano nel periodo post-Arsenale. In conclusione, l'elaborato dimostra come lo studio dei nomi dei luoghi sia di fondamentale importanza per comprendere la storia di un territorio, aiutando a ricostruire l'immagine della città com'era prima dei grandi cambiamenti.

This thesis examines the evolution of the landscape of La Spezia, focusing both on its morphological and urban changes between the 18th and 21st centuries, with cartography and toponymy serving as the primary tools of analysis. The study specifically investigates the dramatic transformations that occurred in the 19th century following the construction of the Military Naval Arsenal, highlighting both the elements of change and continuity. A key aspect of the research is the role of toponymy, which is seen as an essential tool for preserving the memory of places. The thesis is divided into three chapters: the first introduces the theoretical framework of toponymic and cartographic studies; the second analyzes the period from 1773 to 1828 (pre-industrial phase); and the third examines the complete upheaval of the urban fabric after the establishment of the Arsenal. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the importance of studying place names in order to understand the history of a territory, as they help reconstruct the image of the city before the major transformations.
