La fotoidentificazione del grampo (Grampus griseus) nel Santuario Pelagos

Abstract

Dalla fine degli anni ’80 la specie Grampus griseus (G. Cuvier, 1812) è stata regolarmente avvistata nella porzione più occidentale del Mar Ligure (ad ovest di Imperia), all’interno del Santuario Pelagos. Negli ultimi dieci anni, tuttavia, la sua presenza è drasticamente diminuita e le cause di questo declino restano incerte. Tra il 1988 e il 2014 l’Istituto di ricerca Tethys ha fotoidentificato circa 300 individui in questa area, ma la maggior parte di essi (98,7%) non è più stata osservata nel decennio successivo. Per indagare i possibili spostamenti degli individui, l’Istituto ha avviato collaborazioni con altri enti di ricerca e con piattaforme opportunistiche. Con l’obiettivo di verificare l’eventuale presenza nel Golfo di Genova di individui fotoidentificati dall’Istituto Tethys a oltre 100 km di distanza, nell’ambito di questo studio è stato effettuato il confronto del catalogo contenente 95 grampi fotoidentificati nel Golfo di Genova (2017-2025) con l’archivio dell’Istituto Tethys, evidenziando la presenza di 15 (5%) dei 300 individui presenti nel catalogo storico dell’Istituto. Tale risultato indica che alcuni esemplari sono ancora presenti nel Santuario Pelagos, sebbene spostati più ad est. Durante questo studio sono state inoltre analizzate 2.412 immagini raccolte durante diciotto avvistamenti (2023-2025) avvenuti nel Golfo di Genova, permettendo di documentare 173 riavvistamenti e di ampliare il catalogo dei grampi dell’area con 21 nuovi esemplari. Since the late 1980s, the species Grampus griseus (G. Cuvier, 1812) has been regularly sighted in the western sector of the Ligurian Sea (west of Imperia), within the Pelagos Sanctuary. Over the past decade, however, its presence has declined sharply, and the causes of this decrease remain uncertain. Between 1988 and 2014, the Tethys Research Institute photo-identified approximately 300 individuals in the waters off the westernmost Ligurian coast and the French shoreline, yet the majority of them (98.7%) were no longer observed in the area during the following decade. To investigate the possible movements of these individuals, the Institute initiated collaborations with other research entities and opportunistic platforms. To verify whether individuals photo-identified by Tethys at more than 100 km distance might be present in the Gulf of Genoa, this study compared a catalog containing 95 Risso’s dolphins photo-identified in the Gulf of Genoa (2017–2025) with the Tethys archive, revealing the presence of 15 (5%) of the 300 individuals included in the historical catalog. This finding indicates that some animals are still present within the Pelagos Sanctuary, although they have shifted farther east. During this study, 2,412 images collected across eighteen sightings (2023–2025) that occurred in the Gulf of Genoa were also analyzed, allowing for the documentation of 173 re-sightings and the expansion of the area catalogue with 21 newly identified individuals.
