This study originates from the need to implement and optimize the rehabilitation protocols currently used at the San Martino Polyclinic Hospital, with a particular focus on the management of patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. To this end, patients were divided into three clinical risk classes, based on their general condition and the complexity of the surgical procedure.
For patients classified as Class 1 and Class 2, a modified rehabilitation booklet was developed and administered, which included the introduction of two specific motor circuits. The aim of this intervention was twofold: on the one hand, to reduce the adverse effects of prolonged immobility, and on the other, to improve ward management, thus promoting a faster and safer functional recovery.
Regarding Class 3 patients, identified as critical cases, the study focuses on the analysis and synthesis of the main international guidelines concerning the management of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). These guidelines serve as a theoretical framework for planning targeted rehabilitation interventions, tailored to the patient’s clinical condition and level of support required.
