Liceità delle immagini sacre nella diffusione della dottrina cristiana

Abstract

La storia dell’arte cristiana ha, nel corso dei secoli, espresso caratteristiche peculiari, modificate di volta in volta dalle decisioni prese dalle autorità della gerarchia ecclesiastica e dal contesto storico vigente. L’obiettivo della ricerca si è focalizzato sui testi scritti da personalità religiose e laiche in merito alla liceità dell’immagine nella diffusione del messaggio cristiano e sono il frutto di ricerche parallele allo sviluppo delle decisioni teologiche, dedicate soprattutto ad un’impostazione corretta dell’iconografia religiosa. L’immagine nel mondo cristiano assume, sin dalle origini, un’importanza cruciale nell’attività di conversione dei popoli e di insegnamento della parola di Dio nonostante i gravi momenti di crisi con la diffusione di correnti ereticali e protestanti che favoriscono le diffuse e periodiche distruzioni degli ornamenti sacri. In questo contesto la Chiesa cattolica reagisce difendendo fermamente l’uso dell’immagine come parte integrante della tradizione ed essenziale nel ricordo e nella venerazione di Dio e delle figure principali del panorama cristiano. Nel corso del tempo la Chiesa ha cercato, comunque, di vigilare sull’attività degli artisti, con controlli spesso severi e rigorosi, per evitare libertà interpretative che potessero diffondere messaggi erronei e lontani dall’insegnamento cattolico originale, proponendo un’arte religiosa che rispecchiasse i valori cristiani e aiutasse i fedeli nella conversione.

The history of Christian art has, over the centuries, expressed peculiar characteristics, modified from time to time by the decisions taken by the authorities of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and by the historical context in force. The aim of the research focused on texts written by religious and secular personalities regarding the lawfulness of the image in the dissemination of the Christian message and are the result of research parallel to the development of theological decisions, dedicated above all to a correct setting of religious iconography. The image in the Christian world assumes, from the beginning, a crucial importance in the activity of conversion of peoples and teaching the word of God despite the serious moments of crisis with the spread of heretical and Protestant currents that favor the widespread and periodic destruction of sacred ornaments. In this context, the Catholic Church reacts by firmly defending the use of the image as an integral part of tradition and essential in the remembrance and veneration of God and of the main figures of the Christian panorama. Over time, however, the Church has tried to watch over the activity of artists, with controls that are often strict and rigorous, to avoid interpretative freedoms that could spread erroneous messages and far from the original Catholic teaching, proposing a religious art that reflected Christian values and helped the faithful in conversion.
