The thesis analyzes the evolution of the history laboratory as a teaching method by choosing a pivotal topic, that of teaching the First World War. Starting from some considerations also due to the pandemic in progress and the need to review the teaching, we chose to analyze the path taken by the history laboratory starting from the years of the contestation, those of the movement of the Sixty-eight, to then devote itself to the analysis of the textbooks and ministerial provisions relating to the chosen topic. The main question is how it is possible to convey, within the history program, the complexity of an event of exceptional importance such as the Great War. Can a teacher explain the concept of "total war" and the one related to it of "anomie"? This proposes laboratory teaching and the choice to place the First World War under the lens not only of diplomatic and military history, but also of social, economic and gender history. As a pivotal example, we have chosen to bring to light the experience of Rovereto's Materials of Work magazine, within which we talked about both teaching methodologies and contemporary history. The result was the rediscovery of some laboratory experiences based on local history, capable of restoring part of the war experience of both the soldiers and the population. Retracing the years of publication of the magazine has allowed us to highlight some still current teaching techniques, capable of showing how the teaching of history can be supported not only by a wise use of the manual, but also by that of non-canonical materials, such as photographs, written testimonies, oral recordings, documentaries and cinema. For the future, the interest is to show how a history lesson based on laboratory teaching is able to create a connection between the student and the topic, allow him to have that empathy that can overcome the detachment and skepticism towards matter.en_UK
