San Sebastiano nell'arte: l'iconografia del Santo dal XIV al XVI secolo nell'arte genovese

Abstract

San Sebastiano è uno dei santi più rappresentati nella storia dell'arte, venerato come protettore contro epidemie e malattie. Nato in Gallia, forse a Narbona, fu soldato a Milano nell'esercito di Diocleziano. Convertito al cristianesimo, aiutava i cristiani incarcerati, per cui fu condannato a morte. Colpito da frecce, fu soccorso dalla vedova Irene. Dopo la guarigione, si presentò nuovamente a Diocleziano che ne ordinò la morte definitiva, gettandone il corpo nella Cloaca Massima. Un cristiano recuperò il corpo per seppellirlo nelle catacombe, come narrano leggende e Scritture. Tra il VII e l'VIII secolo, San Sebastiano fu spesso rappresentato come un giovane atletico o soldato romano. Dal Rinascimento si diffuse l'iconografia del suo martirio, trafitto dalle frecce, sebbene storicamente la sua morte sia avvenuta per flagellazione. La sua immagine più comune è quella di un giovane legato a una colonna o un albero, trafitto dalle frecce. Questa tesi esamina la figura del santo e le sue rappresentazioni artistiche. Nei primi capitoli si analizzerà il contesto storico del suo martirio, collocandolo nell'era dei martiri per comprenderne l'importanza nel cristianesimo. Successivamente, si esplorerà lo sviluppo del culto, specialmente durante le pandemie di peste, dove San Sebastiano divenne protettore contro la malattia. Saranno analizzate le prime rappresentazioni iconografiche, dalle opere medievali fino al Rinascimento e Barocco. Infine, verrà esaminata la sua figura nel contesto genovese tra XIV e XVI secolo, con particolare attenzione al culto legato alla festa del 20 gennaio e alle rappresentazioni artistiche commissionate da privati e istituzioni genovesi.

Saint Sebastian is one of the most represented saints in art history, venerated as a protector against epidemics and diseases. Born in Gaul, perhaps at Narbonne, he was a soldier in the army of Diocletian in Milan. Once he converted to Christianity, he began helping the imprisoned Christians, for which he was sentenced to death. When he was hit by arrows, he was rescued by his widow Irene. After healing, he presented himself again to Diocletian who ordered his final death, throwing his body in the Cloaca Massima. As legends and Scriptures tell, a fellow Cristian recovered the body to bury it in the catacombs. Between the 7th and 8th centuries, Saint Sebastian was often depicted as a young athletic or Roman soldier. From the Renaissance, the iconography of his martyrdom was pierced by arrows spread, although historically his death occurred by flogging. Nevertheless, his most common image nowadays is that of a young man tied to a column or tree, pierced by arrows. This thesis examines the figure of the saint and his artistic representations. In the first chapters, we will analyze the historical context of his martyrdom, placing it in the age of the martyrs to understand its importance in Christianity. Following, we will explore the development of the cult, especially during the plague pandemic, during which Saint Sebastian became the protector against the disease. The first iconographic representations, from medieval works to the Renaissance and Baroque, will be analyzed. Lastly, its figure will be examined in the context of Genoa between the Fourteenth and Sixteenth centuries, focusing on the cult linked to the feast of the 20th of January and artistic performances commissioned by private individuals and institutions.
