Abstract
This thesis examines the complex political environment of Ethiopia and the international community's response to the Tigray War that went on from 2020 to 2022. The study delves into Ethiopia's political history, exploring the evolution of its statehood and various regimes, including the Derg, TPLF & EPRDF, and the current Prosperity Party. The paper highlights how these regimes' political ideologies and power dynamics have shaped Ethiopia's internal and external policies, setting the stage for the ongoing conflict in Tigray. A critical analysis of the Tigray War is conducted by dissecting its phases: the prewar tensions, the outbreak of war, and the negotiations leading to the ceasefire. This section underscores the severe humanitarian impact, including mass casualties, displacement, and widespread famine conditions. The study also explores the role of the international community, focusing on the United Nations and the 'Responsibility to Protect' doctrine, as well as the broader geopolitical influences affecting the conflict. Finally, the thesis concludes that while the peace agreement signed in November 2022 marks a significant step, the international community's inadequate response and ongoing political instability in Ethiopia continue to challenge the prospects for lasting peace and security.
