Beyond the Box: The Rise of the Smart Container: MSC Case Study

Abstract

Negli ultimi 4 mesi, ho avuto la fortuna di poter lavorare come tirocinante come nella compagnia leader nel settore del trasporto containerizzato conoscendo le realtà di questo settore e riuscendo a comprendere anche l’utilità di tutto quello che ho studiato in questi anni. Il settore logistico ha registrato un‘enorme crescita negli ultimi 20 anni e sembra continuare a crescere senza sosta. Questa crescita senza sosta sta portando a miglioramenti in tutti gli ambiti, partendo dalla sostenibilità passando dalle sfide sociali globali continuando sulla digitalizzazione. Pensare che un container, una scatola di metallo possa diventare uno strumento che può inviare e ricevere informazioni in tempo reale e che possa continuamente informare dello stato del container per tutto il percorso logistico fa capire come anche la digitalizzazione riesce a integrarsi in qualsiasi strumento di guadagno e come può anche migliorare la condizione attuale. Una tecnologia che anche se al primo stadio e solo all’inizio della sua potenzialità, dimostra come potrà avere un impatto importante e utile per il cliente e allo stesso tempo per l’impresa stessa e la propria gestione della flotta.

Over the past four months, I have been fortunate enough to work as an intern at the leading company in the containerized transportation sector. This experience has allowed me to become familiar with the realities of this industry and to understand the practical value of everything I have studied over the years. The logistics sector has seen enormous growth over the past 20 years and shows no signs of stopping. This relentless growth is leading to improvements in all areas, starting with sustainability, addressing global social challenges, and continuing with digitalization. The idea that a container, a metal box, can become a tool that can send and receive information in real-time and continuously update the status of the container throughout the logistics journey demonstrates how digitalization can integrate into any revenue-generating tool and improve the current condition. Although still in its early stages and only at the beginning of its potential, this technology shows how it can have a significant and beneficial impact for both the customer and the company itself, particularly in fleet management.
