La Didone di Giampietro Zanotti

Abstract

Questa prima tragedia dell’autore andrà contestualizzata, ossia posta all’interno di un lasso di tempo che ha come estremi la Merope del Maffei del 1713 e il melodramma Didone abbandonata di Metastasio, rappresentato la prima volta nel 1724: la coincidenza di data e soggetto con quest’ultima opera risulta interessante e soprattutto determinata da una possibile e indiretta influenza di Zanotti su Metastasio, che verrà indagata in conclusione. In questi undici anni, dunque, è racchiusa l’esperienza di maggior successo dello Zanotti drammaturgo, che si è trovato tra due fuochi: da una parte il Maffei, che con la sua tragedia aveva dato inizio e un contorno più definito alla riforma di gusto, stile e contenuto che quel primo Settecento tentava di avviare e sviluppare; dall’altra, il giovanissimo Pietro Trapassi, che con quel suo primo melodramma, così ravvicinato alla tragedia del principiante Zanotti a causa del medesimo soggetto, avrebbe forse definitivamente sotterrato il lavoro del modesto bolognese.

This first tragedy of the author must be contextualized, that is placed in a time frame that has as extremes the Maffei's Merope of 1713 and the melodrama Didone abbandonata by Metastasio, first performed in 1724: the coincidence of date and subject with this last work is interesting and above all determined by a possible and indirect influence of Zanotti on Metastasio, that will be investigated in conclusion. In these eleven years, therefore, is enclosed the most successful experience of the playwright Zanotti, who found himself between two fires: on one side the Maffei, who with his tragedy had started and a more defined the outline to the reform of taste, style and content that the first eighteenth century tried to start and develop; on the other, the young Pietro Trapassi, who with his first melodrama, so close to the tragedy of the beginner Zanotti because of the same subject, it would definitively bury the work of the modest bolognese.
