L’ascolto qualificato all’interno delle strutture assistenziali: come orientare i familiari per sostenere il percorso dell’anziano fragile

Abstract

Lo studio parte da un’analisi demografica a livello nazionale e regionale, con particolare attenzione alla città di Genova, una delle più “anziane” al mondo, in quanto fortemente rappresentativa del fenomeno dell’invecchiamento demografico: presenta un alto tasso di anzianità e mortalità (invecchiamento dall’alto) e un basso tasso di natalità (invecchiamento dal basso). Alla luce delle evidenze, ho ritenuto opportuno cominciare con una disamina delle caratteristiche delle generazioni di anziani attualmente e prossimamente interessate dalla fragilità di salute e dalla vulnerabilità sociale, nell’ottica di una maggiore consapevolezza. Tuttavia, la mia tesi è volta a sottolineare l'importanza della figura dell'assistente sociale e dell’ascolto qualificato nelle strutture; il suo ruolo è, inoltre, equiparabile ad una fonte informativa, uno snodo per l'orientamento, motivo per cui, per sopperire alla lacuna spesso lamentata dagli interessati, il mio lavoro si propone anche di indicare le varie opportunità di cui la persona e la sua famiglia possono usufruire, attraverso un elenco contenete le risorse ed i relativi funzionamenti. Dunque, sulla base di questi presupposti ho deciso di effettuare una ricerca qualitativa sul campo, definendo un disegno di ricerca orientato ad indagare la prospettiva dell’offerta (le strutture) e della domanda (i familiari degli ospiti), concentrandomi sul percorso delle famiglie, la presenza dell’assistente sociale nelle strutture ed il disorientamento rilevato; i principali esiti hanno riportato: una profonda carenza della figura dell’assistente sociale nelle strutture (spesso sconosciuta), colmata dal personale sanitario; un forte disorientamento dei familiari (non conoscono a chi e cosa chiedere); una lacuna tra assistenza domiciliare ed inserimento in struttura. In conclusione, ho articolato alcune proposte per il futuro con lo scopo di smantellare i pregiudizi sulla figura dell’assistente sociale e garantirne una presenza più estesa.

The study starts from a demographic analysis at the national and regional levels, with a particular focus on the city of Genoa, one of the "oldest" in the world, as it is strongly representative of the phenomenon of demographic aging: it has both a high rate of old age and mortality (aging from above) and a low birth rate (aging from below). Given the evidence, I thought it appropriate to begin with an examination of the characteristics of the elderly generations, those that are affected by health fragility and social vulnerability currently or in the next future, with the goal of raising awareness. However, my thesis is aimed at emphasizing the importance of the figure of the social worker and of qualified listening in facilities; their role is, moreover, that of a source of information and/or a junction for orientation, which is why, to make up for the gap often complained about by the affected people, my work also aims at indicating the various opportunities that the person and their family can take advantage of, by creating a list of resources and their functioning. So, based on these assumptions, I decided to conduct qualitative research in the field, defining a research design oriented to investigate the perspective of both supply (the facilities) and demand (the residents' family members), focusing on the families' journey, the presence of the social worker in the facilities and the disorientation detected; the main results are: a profound absence of the figure of the social worker in the facilities (often unaware of it), filled by the health staff; a strong disorientation of the family members (they do not know who and what to ask); a vacuum between home care and facility placement. In conclusion, I have articulated some proposals for the future with the aim of dismantling prejudice against the figure of the social worker and ensuring its more extensive presence.
