Il mercato del Bulk Shipping: il caso delle navi Panamax

Abstract

Il mercato dello shipping si è evoluto al punto tale da ricoprire un ruolo di primaria importanza nello sviluppo dei meccanismi, delle dinamiche dell’economia e del commercio mondiale. Il commercio marittimo si è sviluppato esponenzialmente durante gli anni, diventando uno dei principali driver nel promuovere i traffici ed i flussi movimentati da una parte del mondo all’altra. Oggi lo shipping si distingue in vari sub-mercati, riconducibili alle diverse tipologie merceologiche trasportate e alle modalità di trasporto delle stesse. Sono così nati il mercato delle rinfuse secche (dry bulk market), il mercato delle rinfuse liquide (tanker market), il general cargo market e infine il mercato delle merci containerizzate (container market). Il presente elaborato consiste nell’analisi del mercato delle rinfuse, prestando particolare attenzione al segmento delle rinfuse secche per una specifica size navale, il gruppo delle navi Panamax che racchiude al suo interno tre sub-segmenti: Panamax, Kamsarmax e Post-Panamax. L’intento dell’elaborato è quello di presentare l’attuale situazione del mercato delle rinfuse secche, analizzandolo sia dal lato della domanda sia da quello dell’offerta, passando poi ad una presentazione più dettagliata della size navale selezionata. Verranno anche toccati temi come la sostenibilità, sebbene il trasporto via mare svolga un ruolo di primaria importanza nell’economia dell’Unione Europea e sia uno dei modi di trasporto più efficienti, è anche una delle principali fonti di emissioni di gas serra. Di conseguenza vedremo quali saranno le misure adottate dall’IMO e dall’Unione Europea per conseguire gli obbiettivi di riduzione delle emissioni nocive. Infine saranno disponibili stime future sull’andamento del mercato di rinfuse secche a livello generico, confrontando la domanda, l’offerta e l’equilibrio tra le stesse.

The shipping market has evolved to the point that it plays a role of primary importance in the development of the mechanisms and dynamics of the world economy and trade. Maritime trade has developed exponentially over the years, becoming one of the main drivers in promoting trade and flows from one part of the world to another. Today shipping is divided into various sub-markets, attributable to the different types of goods transported and their transport methods. Thus the dry bulk market, the tanker market, the general cargo market and finally the container market were born. This paper consists of the analysis of the bulk market, paying particular attention to the dry bulk segment for a specific naval size, the group of Panamax ships which includes three sub-segments: Panamax, Kamsarmax and Post-Panamax. The intent of the thesis is to present the current situation of the dry bulk market, analyzing it from both the demand and supply sides, then moving on to a more detailed presentation of the selected vessel size. Topics such as sustainability will also be touched upon. Although sea transport plays a primary role in the economy of the European Union and is one of the most efficient modes of transport, it is also one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently we will see what measures will be adopted by the IMO and the European Union to achieve the objectives of reducing harmful emissions. Finally, future estimates will be available on the trend of the dry bulk market at a generic level, comparing demand, supply and the balance between them.
