e, continua a suscitare, molto interesse.
This thesis investigates the behaviour of a silt-sandy pyroclastic soil stabilised by the combined use of hydrated lime and guar gum, a natural biopolymer. The choice of pyroclastic silt-sandy soil is due to the fact that there are not many studies on this soil type in the literature, but at the same time it is a common soil type in many volcanic regions. Regions characterised by this soil type are susceptible to instability, often causing extensive damage. Therefore, the idea of being able to improve the mechanical properties of the soil, while securing the surrounding areas, has aroused, and continues to arouse, much interest. It is well known that for the production of lime and cement, substances that are traditionally used for soil stabilisation, large quantities of CO2 are released into the atmosphere. Recent studies have investigated the use of biopolymers for soil stabilisation, confirming the possibility of their use in this area. Thus, guar gum can be combined with lime in order to limit the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere during production and in the soil during spreading. In the present experimental campaign, the effect of the combination of hydrated lime and guar gum on the pyroclastic soil by means of two laboratory tests: the edometric test and the direct shear test. Changes in geotechnical properties were analysed, including, consolidation, compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength. The results showed that the addition of hydrated lime and guar gum improved the mechanical properties of the soil, especially under partially saturated conditions. The optimum stabiliser content for the improvement of properties is achieved with the use of 2% hydrated lime and 1% guar gum.
