As of the end of 2012, the ambitious European Future Circular Collider project was funded, the collider will be 100 km long almost 4 times as long as the current one, and the power required by the new magnets is almost twice as high as the current ones.
During the entire seven-month thesis work, carried out at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Genoa (IT), it was necessary to study in depth the FalconD superconducting dipole magnet for future particle accelerators.
The important performances required made mandatory the use of the latest superconductors made of Nb3Sn; therefore, this new technology implied revisiting the traditional design criteria already starting from the modeling of its cross-section.
Taking advantage of Finite Element Analysis, it was possible to model and simulate the behavior of the new conductors; in particular, the entire activity involved modeling only the cross-section in 2D allowing to propose a possible solution presented at the Preliminary Design Review held at CERN in Geneva in August 2022.
Subsequent to the Review, the work continued allowing further important results to be obtained.
