This dissertation aims at analysing the iconography of the Emperor Constantine and its fortunate application during the Modern Age, particularly focusing on figurative arts and the historical context of the Republic of Genoa in the 16th and 18th centuries. Even though the Constantinian myth had a widespread success -both historiographical and artistic- all over the European continent, the examples for such iconographic subject in the XVI-XVIII-centuries Genoese environment are quite sporadic and poorly analysed. In order to achieve the target, this dissertation starts by examining the field of historiographical sources related to the history of the First Christian Emperor, the most important works that in the centuries before the Modern Age already retraced his life and deeds and then it moves to the contextualisation of the myth and its artistic-figurative rendition in the Modern Age, thus providing a complete framework of the historical and iconographic aspects underlying the renewal of the figure of Constantine the Great, that is providing an entire set of tools useful for the analysis of the subject within the Genoese “Golden Age”.
