L'Osservatore Romano e la guerra d'Etiopia (1935-1936)

Abstract

Nella tesi ho analizzato il comportamento dell'Osservatore Romano, giornale della Santa Sede, durante la guerra d'Etiopia (1935-1936). Con i Patti Lateranensi del 1929, papa Pio XI e Mussolini avevano stipulato accordi di reciproca convenienza. Questo condizionò il comportamento del Pontefice di fronte al conflitto italo-etiopico e, di conseguenza anche quello del giornale. L'Osservatore Romano, non dovendo sottostare alla legislatura fascista dal 1929, portava una versione inedita della guerra d'Etiopia, differente dagli altri giornali in lingua italiana.

In the thesis I analyzed the behavior of the Osservatore Romano, the Santa Sede's newspaper, during the war in Ethiopia (1935-1936). With the Lateran Pacts of 1929, Pope Pius XI and Mussolini had stipulated agreements of mutual convenience. This situation conditioned the Pope's behavior in the face of the Italo-Ethiopian conflict and, consequently, also that of the newspaper. L'Osservatore Romano, not having to submit to the fascist legislature since 1929, brought an unpublished version of the war in Ethiopia, different from other Italian-language newspapers.
