"Le guerre civili: la questione siriana"

Abstract

Questa tesi approfondisce il tema delle guerre civili, usando come esempio principale la Guerra civile siriana analizzandone la storia, le cause del conflitto, gli sviluppi, gli attori in gioco e la situazione attuale. Si parte dando una definizione generale di cosa sia una Guerra civile, individuandone le caratteristiche principali e le varie tipologie . Per aver maggior comprensione del tema trattato si andranno ad elencare le Principali guerre civili nella storia: dall’Antica Roma fino ai tempi moderni con appunto La Guerra Civile Siriana (2011-2024). Proprio quest’ultima rappresenta il fulcro dell’elaborato. Si parte inizialmente a inquadrare il contesto storico della Siria in particolar modo dalla fine della Prima Guerra Mondiale fino allo scoppio della guerra civile, con poi un inquadramento delle cause principali del conflitto dove la repressione degli Assad, la crisi economica, la presenza di gruppi estremisti religiosi e l’effetto domino subito dalle Primavere Arabe hanno reso il terreno fertile per lo scoppio di questa guerra. Verranno poi inquadrati i principali attori di questo conflitto, dal regime di Assad e le sue forze fino ad HTS, che di fatto è stata la forza predominante nella caduta di Assad e i vari gruppi armati ribelli come le SDF e l’SNA e gruppi jihadisti come l’ISIS che hanno rappresentato un’ulteriore elemento di instabilità nella regione. Sono state fondamentali le azioni di potenze estere come la Russia, gli Usa, l’Ue e la Turchia, mosse dai propri interessi politici ed economici, nel spostare gli equilibri in questo scenario, catalogando il conflitto come una Proxy War. Infine si arriva a vedere qual è la situazione attuale della Siria con le varie negoziazioni, soluzioni istituzionali e tentativi di ridurre le tensioni nel paese e le sfide che il nuovo governo dovrà affrontare. This thesis explores the theme of civil wars, using the Syrian Civil War as the main case study by analyzing its history, the causes of the conflict, its developments, the actors involved, and the current situation. It begins by providing a general definition of what constitutes a civil war, identifying its main characteristics and various types. To gain a better understanding of the topic, the thesis reviews the major civil wars in history: from Ancient Rome to modern times, with a particular focus on the Syrian Civil War (2011–2024), which represents the core of the research. The Syrian case is examined starting from its historical background, especially from the end of World War I up to the outbreak of the civil war. The main causes of the conflict are then analyzed: the Assad regime’s repression, economic crisis, the presence of extremist religious groups, and the domino effect of the Arab Spring all contributed to creating fertile ground for the war.

The thesis then looks at the key actors involved in the conflict, from the Assad regime and its forces to HTS, which became the dominant force behind Assad's fall, as well as other rebel groups like the SDF and the SNA, and jihadist groups such as ISIS, which brought further instability to the region. External powers such as Russia, the U.S., the EU, and Turkey also played a fundamental role, driven by their political and economic interests, turning the conflict into a proxy war. Finally, the current situation in Syria is addressed, focusing on ongoing negotiations, institutional solutions, and efforts to ease tensions, along with the challenges the new government is expected to face.

The aim of this thesis is to provide a tool for understanding civil wars by using the Syrian conflict as a case study— a war driven by religious, ethnic, and cultural dynamics, as well as deep-rooted economic and geopolitical interests.
