Tra Autoritarismo e Democrazia: Evoluzioni e Involuzioni Politiche in Sudafrica, Venezuela e Russia

Abstract

Lo studio dei vari regimi politici e delle loro evoluzioni rappresenta un tema di centrale importanza nella scienza politica, poiché permette di comprendere meglio le dinamiche del potere, le transizioni politiche e le relative conseguenti implicazioni sulla società. Questa tesi si propone di analizzare le similitudini e le differenze tra totalitarismo e autoritarismo, per poi esaminare il concetto di democrazia e le sue possibili trasformazioni nel tempo, approfondite mediante lo studio della teoria dello studioso Samuel P. Huntington e i regimi ibridi. Facendo riferimento a tale teoria, verranno presi ad oggetto tre Paesi che hanno attraversato importanti trasformazioni e cambiamenti nei loro sistemi governativi. Il primo capitolo, approfondisce il tema dei due sistemi di governo dittatoriali, accomunati dall’assenza di libertà politiche e dalla concentrazione del potere. Per fornire un quadro empirico corretto, i successivi capitoli andranno ad analizzare tre casi di studio emblematici. Il secondo capitolo tratterà il caso del Sudafrica, esempio che rappresenta una transizione dalla dittatura dell’apartheid ad una democrazia compiuta. Il terzo capitolo, prenderà in esame il caso del Venezuela, un paese che mostra un percorso inverso, passando da una democrazia ad un regime autoritario prima sotto la guida di Hugo Chávez e successivamente di Nicolás Maduro. Il quarto e ultimo capitolo offre, invece, il caso della Russia che presenta una continuità autoritaria, evidenziando come il passaggio alla democrazia possa essere solo apparente e reversibile.

The study of different political regimes and their evolution is a central theme in political science, as it allows to better understand the dynamics of power, political transitions and their consequent implications on society. This thesis aims at analyzing the similarities and differences between totalitarianism and authoritarianism, then it examines the concept of democracy and its possible transformations over time, the study of Samuel P. Huntington’s theory and hybrid regimes. Referring to this theory, three countries which have undergone major transformations and changes in their government systems will be addressed. The first chapter, delves into the theme of the two dictatorial systems of government, united by the absence of freedom policies and the concentration of power. To provide a correct empirical picture, the following chapters will analyze three cases of study. The second chapter will deal with the case of South Africa, an example that represents a transition from the Apartheid dictatorship to a complete democracy. The third chapter, will examine the case of Venezuela, a country that shows a reverse path, going from a democracy to an authoritarian regime first under the leadership of Hugo Chávez and later under Nicolás Maduro. The fourth and last chapter offers, instead, the case of Russia which presents an authoritarian continuity, highlighting how the transition to democracy can only be apparent and reversible.
